Tree Disposition Plans

Many municipalities require that a tree disposition plan be submitted as a part of the permitting process. A disposition plan usually consists of a tree survey that shows the trees plotted on a survey, an inventory which shows the trees numbered on a spread sheet with condition ratings and species and sizes. This can be a very confusing process for builders, architects, and homeowners. You will likely be required to hire an ISA Certified Arborist to have the plan created. The owners of ArborTrue helped author the tree protection legislation for Texas, so our ISA Certified Arborists will be able to help you navigate the process with ease and confidence.

What is a Pine Bark Beetle?

The Pine Bark Beetle is a small insect that is known for its brutal attacks on pine trees in large groups. They are attracted to trees that are experiencing high amounts of stress due to drought, flooding, neglect, etc.. The Pine Bark Beetle is approximately the size of a grain of rice and bores a small hole through the bark and into the vascular layers of the pine tree. These layers allow the flow of nutrients from the root system to the canopy of the tree. Although small, the Pine Bark Beetle attacks the tree in large numbers so that the number of boreholes in the pine tree can reach up to the thousands. Ultimately, the vascular layer of the tree is disrupted to the point that essential nutrients are no longer able to reach the tree’s foliage and the tree dies. This can take as little as 14 days from the time the Pine Bark Beetle enters the tree. By the time you notice the Pine Bark Beetle infestation, it may have already been 10 days or more.

How Do Arborists Manage These Pests?

certified Houston arborist
A small plug, called an ArborPlug, is directly inserted into a drill hole around the base of the tree. A specialized needle is then inserted into the Arborplug and the formula is injected into the vascular system of the tree. The formula is then dispersed throughout the trunk, branches, and leaf tissue. The ArborPlug keeps the injected formula inside the tree, protects the drill hole, and remains inside the tree without causing any adverse effects. The tree begins to fight off the Pine Bark Beetle infestation from the inside-out and in time grows right over the plug. Pine Bark Beetles will generally attack the closest pine tree after they are finished with the original tree. It is important to talk with your Arborist about performing this procedure on the neighboring trees to decrease the chance of a bark beetle infestation spreading to the rest of your yard and/or your neighborhood.

Why is This Method Beneficial?

We believe this method could be a great cure for Pine Bark Beetles if applied at the right time. After the procedure, there are no chemicals that are left in the yard or air so it is safe for your children and pets. The treatment is highly effective and supported by proven university trials. The product used lasts for 2 years and its long-lasting effects will ensure the safety of your trees from unwanted pests for the following years.

What Method Does NOT Work?

Spraying the Trees: Spraying a tree is only effective for pests that actually come in contact with the insecticide. Pine Bark Beetles are embedded beneath the bark of the tree, so spraying would not be very helpful. Spraying will also kill desirable insects nearby such as butterflies, honey bees, ladybugs, and others. Spraying insecticides is not legal near waterways and is toxic to native fish. It can also be extremely messy and will wash off during periods of rain.

What Does it Cost?

The cost to treat for Pine Bark Beetles is based on the amount of product used, trunk diameter, and labor for application. Contact Spring Arborist today to schedule your consultation by calling 281-410-1988 or you can fill out our online contact form.
